Move Time Logger on a Vista Computer

Top  Previous  Next

If you need to move Time Logger on your Vista computer, please use these directions.

NOTE: If you have User Account Control turned on, then the Macros feature will not work with Time Logger if you have installed Time Logger to the default C:\Program Files\Timelog folder.  You will need to follow these directions to move Time Logger to a different folder and then the Macros should function correctly.  To determine if you have User Account Control turned on, follow these steps: (You will need Administrator privileges)

START->Control Panel->User Accounts->Turn User Account Control or or off

If "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" is checked, then UAC is ON.

IMPORTANT: Do not change the UAC setting.  Changing UAC will "break" Time Logger.  If UAC is changed, and Time Logger breaks, do not panic. Time Logger can easily be fixed once key files are copied to their correct folder.  Please contact technical support.

NOTE: To determine where Time Logger is installed, find the Main Directory in the Advanced/Diagnostics window.

1.Navigate to the C:\Program Files folder (or where Time Logger is installed) and right-click on the Timelog folder and select Copy.

Select and Copy the Timelog folder

2.In a new location, and optionally a new folder, but not under C:\Program Files or C:\Windows, paste the Timelog folder and note the new location.

For example, we created a new folder called Programs in the C:\User\Public folder and will paste the Timelog folder into it.  Thus, we end up with: C:\Users\Public\Programs\Timelog.  Note that you may use a different location.

3.Next, navigate back to the C:\Program Files\Timelog folder (or where Time Logger was originally installed) and click the Compatibility Files button.

Click on the Vista Compatibility Files button<br>

4.Select all of the folders and files in the Compatibility Files location (Edit->Select All) and then select Edit->Copy.

NOTE: If you do not see the menu "File, Edit, View, etc.", select Organize->Layout->Menu Bar.

5.Then, navigate to the C:\User\Public\Programs\Timelog folder (or your desired location) and select Edit->Paste.

6.You should receive two notices from Vista.  Follow the directions on each of the two images:

7.Then re-install Time Logger (using the setuptimelogger.exe file that you can download from our website) into the new folder location and click Yes when warned that the folder already exists.  Also, be sure to select to have a Responsive Time Logger shortcut created on your desktop.  Note that you may need to manually delete old shortcuts to the original location.

For example, on the screen where it says to select your destination folder (location where Time Logger will be installed), make sure it is: C:\Users\Public\Programs\Timelog or click the Browse button if necessary and select the correct folder.

8.When you are done, start Time Logger and ensure that everything has copied over correctly.

IMPORTANT: We strongly urge you to rename your original Timelog folder to something like: C:\Program Files\Timelog-old-YYYY-MM-DD where YYYY-MM-DD is the year, month and day that you made the move.

NOTE: When you run the installer over an existing Time Logger folder, your data will not be overwritten and you should not have to re-enter your Registration Code.

To re-install the Palm Interface, you must first select to have it installed during the setup process (when you run setuptimelogger.exe check the box on the "Select Components" screen) and then click:

START->Program Files->Responsive Time Logger->Install Time Logger to the Handheld

NOTE: If your Time Records database file is not in the folder where Time Logger is installed, you will need to copy that file also (see: Diagnostics Window to determine where your time records database file is located on your old computer).  Additionally, when you first  start Time Logger on your new computer, you might need to specify where your Time Records database file is located and open it.

TIP: To make two Time Records database files the same (synchronized), and effectively transfer Time Records between two time records database files (which could be on different computers that are connected somehow), use File->Synchronize Databases.
