Copy/Move Time Logger to a New Computer

Top  Previous  Next

If you upgrade to a new computer, or wish to copy Time Logger to your second computer, please follow these directions.

IMPORTANT: If you are copying from a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer running Time Logger version 4.x, please use these directions.

NOTE: As long as the same person is using Time Logger, it can legally be installed on multiple computers, such as your Desktop and Laptop.  See: Maintaining Multiple Copies of a Database for help managing Time Logger's data on multiple computers.

Directions:

1.Copy the Timelog folder where Time Logger is installed from the original computer to an external storage device (if necessary).  Note the path to the Timelog folder.

For example: C:\Program Files\Timelog

NOTE: To determine where Time Logger is installed, find the Main Directory in the Advanced/Diagnostics window.

2.On the new computer paste the Timelog folder into the C:\Program Files folder (on a 32 bit computer) or C:\Program Files (x86) folder (on a 64 bit computer) .

For example, paste the Timelog folder into the folder: C:\Program Files

This will result in you having C:\Program Files\Timelog on a 32 bit computer or C:\Program Files (x86)\Timelog on a 64 bit computer

3.Then re-install Time Logger (using the setup-time-logger.exe file that you can download from our website) into that exact same path/folder on the new computer.

For example, on the screen where it says to select your destination folder (location where Time Logger will be installed), make sure it is: C:\Program Files\Timelog or click the Browse button if necessary and select the correct folder.

NOTE: When you run the installer over an existing Time Logger folder, your data will not be overwritten and you should not have to re-enter your Registration Code.

To re-install the Palm Interface, you must first select to have it installed during the setup process (when you run setuptimelogger.exe check the box on the "Select Components" screen) and then click:

START->Program Files->Responsive Time Logger->Install Time Logger to the Handheld

NOTE: If your Time Records database file is not in the folder where Time Logger is installed, you will need to copy that file also (see: Diagnostics Window to determine where your time records database file is located on your old computer).  Additionally, when you first  start Time Logger on your new computer, you might need to specify where your Time Records database file is located and open it.

TIP: To make two Time Records database files the same (synchronized), and effectively transfer Time Records between two time records database files (which could be on different computers that are connected somehow), use File->Synchronize Databases.

Detailed Directions:

1) On the original computer select and copy the "TimeLog" folder (directory) - or wherever you installed Time Logger.  The default location is:

C:\Program Files\TimeLog

NOTE: To determine where Time Logger is installed, find the Main Directory in the Advanced/Diagnostics window.

You can put the original copy on a USB Flash drive, CD or transfer it using other methods.

NOTE: If you are using a Time Records database that is not located under the TimeLog folder, you will need to copy it as well from and to the same location following these basic steps.  See: Diagnostics Window to determine where your time records database file is located.

2) On the new computer, you will put a copy of the TimeLog folder into the C:\Program Files folder (on a 32 bit computer) or C:\Program Files (x86) folder (on a 64 bit computer) .  Therefore, using the current example, you would select the:

C:\Program Files (32 bit computer)

or

C:\Program Files (x86)    (64 bit computer)

folder and then copy and paste the TimeLog folder into that location so that you have: C:\Program Files\TimeLog or C:\Program Files (x86)\TimeLog.

3) On the new computer, download the latest version called the Responsive Time Logger Free Trial (Demo) at:

http://www.responsivesoftware.com/setup-time-logger.exe

You can either choose to Run this file or Save the file setup-time-logger.exe to your new computer and then open it to run it.

4) On the new computer, run setup-time-logger.exe (the one you downloaded in step 2 above) and when it asks you where to install Time Logger choose the same location as where you copied the files in step #1 above.  Again, the default location is below (though yours may be different).  Also, if you are going to use the Responsive Time Logger Palm Interface, be sure to check the box to have that installed on the "Select Components" screen).  [NOTE: to successfully install the Responsive Time Logger Palm Interface your Palm Desktop software must already be installed and you must be able to successfully Hotsync with your Palm device.]

C:\Program Files\TimeLog

or

C:\Program Files (x86)\TimeLog

NOTE: The process of re-installing Time Logger should NOT overwrite any of your data.  When done correctly your old data should be available on your new computer and you will not have to re-enter your Registration Code.

5) Now, when you run Time Logger, it should recognize your original registration and run as a full featured version.  It should not ask you for your Registration Code.   If it does ask you for your registration code, then chances are that the location where you copied the TimeLog folder and the location where you performed the install did not match and you can un-install Time Logger and try these steps again.

Verify that your original data is there and add a test creating a time record to be sure you can see all of the same Client and Project settings.

6) To install the Responsive Time Logger Palm Interface, click the option below found under your computers desktop "START" button:

START->Program Files->Responsive Time Logger->Install Time Logger to the Handheld

This will open one or more windows that allow you to "schedule" (using the Palm Install Tool) the TimeLog.prc (the program file for the file RESPONSIVE TIME LOGGER PALM INTERFACE) to be Hotsynced to your Palm device the next time you perform a Hotsync.  Be sure to select the User name that you use when Hotsyncing your Palm device.  Now, the next time you Hotsync, the software will be installed (or re-installed) on your Palm (but not your corresponding data from your computer) and each successive Hotsync will transfer your data between your computer and the Palm device.
