Backing Up your Palm Time Records Manually

Top  Previous  Next

To manually back up your Time Records on your Palm, follow these steps.

Optionally use this prior to selecting "Desktop Overwrites Handheld" for the Time Records and doing a HotSync.

1) Start your desktop version of Time Logger

2) Remember your original time records database file name.  (See below:)  You will re-open it later.

3) Select File/New and create a new time records database file with a unique name. [WARNING: If you create a new empty time records database file with the exact same name as an existing file you will essentially delete the original file if you click "Yes" when the system asks you if you want to overwrite the file.  Make sure your new name is unique.]

4) Close your desktop version of Time Logger.

5) Right-click on the HotSync icon on your task bar on the lower-right of your screen.

6) Select "Custom".

7) Select your username from the list (if you are the only one using the Handheld there is only one username).

8) Double-click on Time Logger.

9) Select the "Time Records File" Tab and verify that the radio button that names your new time records database file you created in step 3 above is selected.  If it is not, then select the second radio button and click the Browse button and select the new time records database file you created in step 3 above.

10) Click OK and close the windows returning to your desktop.

11) HotSync your handheld.

12) Open your desktop version of Time Logger.

13) The new time records database file should now contain your time records from your handheld and as long as your Filter is clear (press: Toolbar_Clear_Filter_Active ) and you followed the previous steps correctly, you should see those time records.  They are now backed up to this new time records database file. [Please continue to the next step.]

14) Select "File" and in the #2 spot at the bottom (above "Exit") should be your original time records database file name (assuming you didn't open other time record database files during these steps) .  Click that to return to your current time records database file and close Time Logger.

At this point you could perform a HotSync with the settings "Desktop Overwrites Handheld" for the Time Records and know that your handheld time records are backed up.

NOTE: After you perform a HotSync with the settings "Desktop Overwrites Handheld", you can easily "merge" the records from the new time records database file (that  contains your backed up Palm time records) into your original time records database file.  While you are using your original time records database file select File/Synchronize Databases/Slow and pick your new time records database file.  Note that if you have time records that were changed in both files, Time Logger will ask you which one you want to keep as the "master" in the original time records database file.
